The aim of this programme is to provide advanced education for practicing teachers and potential teachers of English who wish to develop a critical understanding of theory, practice and research in second language learning and teaching, and to explore how they can apply this understanding to their own teaching.
The programme comprises core courses in key areas such as the social context of language education in Hong Kong, second language acquisition, and research methods, as well as courses which focus on language teaching and learning, covering areas such as phonology, grammar, discourse, and language assessment. In the programme, students either complete a research project or take two electives. Electives offered concentrate on English language pedagogy, and cover areas such as new technologies in language teaching, or the use of literature in the classroom. Throughout the programme, students are encouraged to apply the theoretical concepts learned to their own teaching contexts, often in the form of action research projects to be completed as course assignments.
