Introduction

The MA in English Studies offered by the Department of English at City University of Hong Kong provides a flexible programme of study enabling students to follow a mainstream general track or choose a stream in Teaching English as a Second Language or a stream in Literary and Cultural Studies. The programme provides students with a professional education leading to a wide range of opportunities open to English specialists. It also provides a strong foundation for those wishing to undertake Ph.D. research in many areas of English studies.

The General Track (no stream) offers a solid foundation in English studies for students interested in an English-related discipline. It prepares students for language-intensive careers requiring higher skills in Englishor for higher-level research degrees. The general track comprises 2 core courses and 8 electives if dissertation is not chosen as one of the electives or 7 electives if dissertation is chosen as one of the electives.

The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) stream provides current or future teachers of English with a background in up-to-date methods of teaching English. Incorporating a suitable mix of theory and practice, this stream will qualify students to take up advanced positions in the English Language Teaching sector on completion of the programme, or will serve as a useful preparation to higher degree studies. The TESL stream comprises 2 core courses, 2 compulsory electives, and 6 other electives if dissertation is not chosen as one of those electives or 5 other electives if dissertation is chosen as one of those electives.

The Literature, Language and Culture (LLC) stream is designed for students who wish to promote English language learning in a broad range of language arts, specifically literature and popular culture. It will provide students with the theoretical and practical tools they need to develop in the areas of literary studies and cultural studies. The LLC stream comprises 2 core courses, 2 compulsory electives, and 6 other electives if dissertation is not chosen as one of those electives or 5 other electives if dissertation is chosen as one of those electives.
